A History of Excellence...
Great golf clubs with histories dating 50, 75 or even 100 or more years are common. Although The Club Pelican Bay is a relatively young club, it's just as respected and held in high esteem like many of its older counterparts. With the many golf clubs in the area, The Club Pelican Bay is arguably one of the finest courses – and clubs – on Florida's West Coast.
From humble beginnings on the drafting board of one of America's great golf course designers, Mr. Arthur Hills, today
The Club Pelican Bay is recognized as a premier golf club.
Early development of the Pelican Bay area was headed by Westinghouse Electric, Inc. Chairman and CEO Bob Kirby. Kirby's eye on the development gained international attention and repute for exceptional design, environmental concerns and a wide variety of quality housing. Douglas D. Danforth, Kirby's successor at Westinghouse, was also passionate about the development of the Pelican Bay Area. The goal: create a community of exceptional quality with lifestyle standards second-to-none.
The first ten memberships were set aside for Westinghouse Corporate executive use. Hanna and Bob Nevins became the first members of the club in 1979.
In 1979 John Carroll, renowned golf professional at The Wilderness in Naples, visited the development. He never left until his recent retirement!
Over the years, growth has been planned and executed at The Club Pelican Bay, always with an eye toward the original aim of being an environmentally-conscious and elegant community.
For three consecutive years – 1988, 1989 and 1990 – The Club Pelican Bay hosted the Aetna Challenge stop of the Senior PGA tour. The course hosted golf legends Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Billy Casper, Gene Littler, Chi Chi Rodriguez and many others.
What started out as an 18-hole golf course 25 years ago is now three, nine-hole courses, named “The Club;” “The Pelican,” and “The Bay.”
We've hosted our share of professional and amateur tournaments. But most importantly for our members, the course is always in tournament condition, due to our planned, meticulous, year-round maintenance program, headed up by Bob Bittner, our Director of Golf Course Operations.
